The office entered the design competition launched by the Timișoara Municipality in autumn 2023. The task was to rethink the axis connecting the “main street” of Timișoara, Opera Square, and the square in front of the Metropolitan Cathedral.

The close-knit team set to work with great enthusiasm. During the design process, it was important to modernise the district in line with the large European cities, while also emphasising its historical values and the richness of its green spaces.

Our goal in the competition was to ensure that Népliget could play its significant role and be given a new identity while preserving its existing values. Gateway areas were a particular focus of our plan. The core structure of the existing road network has been retained, with contemporary elements added. Habitats created by spontaneous forest regeneration have been supplemented with newly planted biodiverse, climate-adaptive vegetation to ensure sustainability. The facilities have been expanded to meet the needs of a broader range of visitors, especially young people and nature sports enthusiasts, for whom the park offers great recreational opportunities. One of the main identity features of the park is the elliptical pedestrian space in the Mutatványosok square. The new furniture in the park is inspired by the existing red benches.

The main goal of the design is to create an urban park that is connected to its surroundings through its spatial relationships and functional design, becoming an integral part of the local urban structure. High-quality renovation and respect for historical values will create a representative point in the 18th district, which can host local events and celebrations. From the concept of the space by Béla Rerrich, we kept the diagonal paths and the central oval lawn design, as well as the garden paths leading to it. The circulation pattern of the square needs only minor changes, as the current one meets the requirements of the users. In the designed square, the canopy and lawn level are intended to be the dominant features.

As part of the competition, our aim in designing and landscaping the open space was to retain the atmosphere of a community garden, so that it remains a charming, quiet and calming museum garden. In contrast, we have emphasised the open space in front of the museum as a square, creating a large, continuous and ceremonial space.

The atmosphere of the garden is strongly influenced by the statues of local and world famous people. We have emphasised this with a playful yet solemn pathway network. They all focus on a single statue – existing and new statues, drinking fountains, and a series of them revealing hidden corners of the museum garden. The new elements and features of the garden are located behind the museum.

In addition to the idea of a decorative paving, which was developed taking into account the existing buildings, the proposal also included solutions for new resting and seating areas. We also considered the design of the square for several events (e.g. an advent fair). Emphasis has been placed on increasing the proportion of green space and on the design of tree rows. The proposed restaurant and café terraces would increase the quality of space use.

The plaza was designed as a typically paved, multifunctional main square. Its use is dominated by the café terraces that fill the plaza with life. The National Flag is a focal point, with a prominent position linking several visual directions. The Reformed Church was given a new significance and was integrated into the life of the square. Seating cubes were placed under the trees. An important element of the main square is the large open lawn area on the site of the fire barracks, which with its large surface conditioning the microclimate of the space and providing a place to sit, relax and enjoy the sun. The water feature at the base of the horse statue adds to the visual and environmental value of the space. The design was carried out in collaboration with REProjekt Architects.

The harmony of the terraced landscape and the adjacent open field is emphasised by the two prominent architectural features, the funeral home and the chapel at the end of the inner axis, designed by architect Tamás Lévai. The great value of the land-use proposal is the continuous open grassland that runs all the way to the top of the hill, which, together with the pre-afforestation, will ensure good usability until the completion of the later phases. The landscaping of Phase I, which is an unit in itself, is in line with the overall concept. The plan was selected for purchase without ranking. The visuals are the works of László Harnos.
