The project is part of one of the country’s most significant industrial heritage sites – the former Northern Vehicle Repair – and was designed by an international design team. The building was designed by the world-famous architectural firm Diller Scofidio + Renfro, with M-Teampannon Kft. as the Hungarian partner. Our office assisted the international landscape architects (Gross MAX Ltd.) in the preparation of the permit and construction plans. Our goal is to provide a unique landscape experience by transforming a former brownfield area into a new, robust post-industrial environment. As an extension of the museum’s interior spaces, an accessible, extensive outdoor exhibition will be created, featuring an inspiring dialogue between man-made and natural elements juxtaposed, and the garden will also play an educational role through both the vegetation and the artefacts on display. In the surroundings of the new museum, a mosaic of different native plant communities will be displayed, representing Hungary’s rich diversity plant communities.

The diverse vegetation in the revitalised brownfield area can have a positive impact on the wider environment as a “diaspora” of biodiversity. The central feature of the garden, the multifunctional Event plaza, can be used as a venue for a variety of events. The complex combination of different plant surfaces, exhibits and paved surfaces creates a sense of intimacy, while offering exhibition areas and a variety of seasonal programmes. The site is already of strategic importance in terms of urban structure, and its role will be further enhanced by the new railway station. The garden and Népliget have an important green network connection, which will be further strengthened by a green pedestrian axis in the future.

Prize: Architecture MasterPrize – Architectural Design of the Year 2022

The House of Hungarian Music was was designed in the framework of the Liget Project, in international collaboration, in a previously closed area of the City Park, abandoned for decades. The building was designed by Sou Fujimoto Architects and built in collaboration with Hungarian partner M-Teampannon. The architectural concept is based on the unity of the open spaces and the building, therefore the garden has been given a particularly important role. The concentric circular pattern of planting is inspired by the sound waves. The meeting of different levels – the outdoor stage and the beer garden below – creates an exciting spatial experience. The space created by the overhanging roof of the building, the column hall and the trees that break through the roof create a special forest atmosphere and a unique planting challenge. Between the pavements, ‘floating’ plant patches of varying heights provide a visual connection between the different functional spaces.

The building complex was designed by O’Donnell + Tuomey Ltd. and Teampannon Ltd.. In creating the CEU’s roof garden, the primary intention was to create a usable, flexibly configurable space that would provide the garden experience often missing in the city centre. The atmosphere of the garden is defined by the varying colours of the paving, wooden seating and plant patches. The wooden seating areas with steps provide a good opportunity to relax, study and meet. A diverse planting scheme includes low shrubs, perennial beds and deciduous trees planted in planters to offset exposure. All these combine to ensure both a beautiful scene and a pleasant stay.

Among the existing features, the design was influenced by the valuable trees, the lack of shrub cover and the significant grassed area in need of renovation. An important part of the design task was to resolve accessibility issues and to provide visual connection due to the nature of the care centre. The client and stakeholders requested the installation of new garden features to meet the changed, specific function: such as therapeutic raised plant beds for ease of use, exploratory walkways with resting areas for therapy classes, and a multifunctional terrace system that also provides the opportunity for drama classes. The garden pavements have been designed with accessibility in mind. High shrubs along the fence provides a calm atmosphere for therapy sessions.

Our design task was to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing environment for the proposed buildings. The site currently has an old tree population of very valuable species. When considering the location of the buildings, it was crucial to protect the existing trees. One of the most important tasks in the design of the garden was the construction of garden paths to access the buildings. The accommodation buildings ‘face each other’, so that the spaces between each building can function well as communal spaces and gardens. Thus, these garden areas were largely paved with solid paving, while smaller, more intimate recreational spaces were created with turf paving and garden benches. In all cases, the existing tree population was taken into careful attention when paving the areas.

Our aim in the concept was to ensure that the new unit, created by the extension of the park and road network, could also be a well-functioning site. This has been achieved by continuing the curved road that runs alongside the chapel, thus creating a link between the two plots and providing a visual and functional connection. The quiet zone for pedestrian traffic is provided by a green strip and a tree line separating the two areas. Walking paths with sweeping lines run around the building, providing opportunities for longer and shorter walks. The garden and the building, designed by WAM Design, as well as the paths, have been planned with minimum disturbance to the forest and existing vegetation.

The elongated-shaped site has a similar kind of building, designed by Horber Ltd. For outdoor activities, different types of units have been created in the back garden to match the layout of the building. These ensure the mental and physical development of children of different ages, and the development of their ecological understanding. The following activity units have been created: playgrounds with standard play equipment, a water play area, an elevated grass area, a vegetable garden and composting area, a waste collection yard, a gym, and various paved surfaces. Between the play areas and the rear boundary, we have created small and large hills that children enjoy and that have a positive effect on their mobility. The area was previously an agricultural land, with no existing trees or shrubs. The proposed design includes native trees and shrubs, so children can learn about the native flora of our country.

For the access to the building and the garden of the kindergarten planned by Horber Ltd., two intersecting paved paths were designed. The paths and the building divides the garden into 3 larger units with a total of 4 linked play areas. In the quieter area behind the building, two large play areas have been created with a variety of play equipment. Between the two units, small hills have been created to increase the children’s mobility options. A well-sustainable garden can be achieved by planting a wide variety of plants, using plant material that is adapted to each other and to the site. The plants in the garden have been selected to be non-toxic, with different colours, shapes and scents to help the education of children about the environment and develop their aesthetic sense.
